Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa
Rica
Officially created on September 26th
, 1994 by an executive decree published
in the official Gazette. The Arenal
Volcano National Park had previously
been a protected area but under
different management categories. With an
area of 12010.6 square hectares, the
Arenal Volcano National Park is located
in Guanacaste, and includes districts of
San Carlos and San Ramon in the
Providence of Alajuela.
The Arenal Volcano has had different
names throughout the years: Arenal Hill,
Sugar Bread, Basket Volcano, Costa Rica
Volcano, Rio Frio Volcano, Agouti Hill.
It is an impressive and beautiful strato-volcano
with conic shape, located about seven
kilometers northeast of la Fortuna, San
Carlos.
The name of "Arenal" refers to the
fact that lava decomposes through
physical chemical processes into lithic
sands, which afterwards deposited at the
feet of the volcano makes frequent
deposits of pyroclastic fluids
